My parents are going to check out a Bronze 2005 Toyota Camry that someone we know is selling. They want to replace our 2000 Honda Odyssey with it. The Camry has 58k miles and they are selling it for $9300. Do you guys think its a good deal for a DD?
Not my pic nor is it the car just a similar example

just to clarify, do we think $9300 is a good selling price for an odyssey? or do we think an 05 camry is a good DD?

$9300 seems like alot of money to blow on a DD. If your Odyssey works well for you, then keep for as long as possible and don't replace it needlessly.

For the camry, we have no idea when we are selling the odyssey. All we know is now that my brother and I are grown, it makes no sense to DD a 14mpg Minivan that I lovingly call Merv.

Tell them it's not worth it if you need more room and that you still don't trust the stigma left by the recalls.

I think $9300 for an 11 year old car is CP, and no, it doesn't matter to me that there are only 58k miles on it. Maybe $7-8000

Depending on the engine, it doesn't seem to be a bad deal. If they aren't car people, there is nothing wrong with the Camry.

The odyssey is too much car for us now. My brother and I are grown, My dad drives it mostly and he takes public transit to work. It makes no sense to get 14mpg on a car you rarely drive

14 mpg, holy hell thats bad. Something be broken on that sucker, I get nearly 14 mpg in the cruiser.

It got that from the factory, its a minivan what do you expect?

Any amount of money for a Camry is a bad deal.

I need to clarify the camry has 58k and is selling for 9800
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:06 |

I tried to talk them out of it

I drive a 42 year old heap that gets about 12 mpg nearly 64 miles every day. Gas mileage doesn't matter as long it works.
Personally, I wouldn't get rid of functioning vehicle until it turns to dust. Drive it till it dies.

For something supposed rated 18/25, 14 implies broken. I got better in the Tundra! At any rate, Camry seems like a good commuter with decent space.

its not meant to get 18/25 its supposed to get 16/23, it probably gets 14 because it sits for the majority of the week and is driven mostly in the city. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/noframes/1…

Makes sense to me. I get 14mpg on a car I rarely drive. If I drove it 15k miles a year it wouldn't make sense. For $300-400 extra a year in gas, it doesn't make sense to swap it. The fun factor is worth the extra cost in my case. If you have an occasional car it should be fun.

CP,
Edit: even if it were a top-of-the-line Camry
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:11 |

But an odyssey is not fun
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:11 |

Something better than a 5500 lbs full time 4wd suv.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:13 |

There are '05 Camry's with more miles going for thousands more.

I hear you. Every once in a while my dad mentions "Toyota Avalon" and I look at him like

And neither is a camry. Lets get this man something better.

PLEASE, My parents are dead set on this, help them. NO GERMAN, that would be an automatic hell no

Thing is, most people are reporting 20.6 as the average . Even the stop and go types are getting in the 16's (except that one sad dude in OR)
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:18 |

just noticed that. Still CP, edmunds says $7200 for private party even with the V6

11 year old car. Standard depreciation still applies.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:19 |

I live at high altitude that could also be a factor
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:20 |

Very true if you are talking about the odyssey, but the camry is 9 years old
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:21 |
|
I didn't say it isn't worth it. I just think I wouldn't pay that much for it. They are pretty decent cars, but I think it's just too much. At that price, you may as well start looking for low end newer cars and get a warranty.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:22 |
|
That's true, but its still pathetic. I mean, Im at 5000 feet and daily drive the cruiser at get 13.5, mostly city.
These things are notoriously thirsty and I have bigger tires, shorter gears and a lift. It blow my mind apart that we are getting roughly the same mileage.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:24 |

I like Odysseys. maybe $8500 will get you a buyer. but shoot for the stars if you're selling. I still think the Camry is overpriced.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:28 |
|
ya the camry is overpriced, our odyssey has 92k miles and has a large non restrictive dent on the passenger sliding door, but surprisingly, we've never had transmission problems
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:33 |
|
I can't think of any new car worth driving in the not much higher price range.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:35 |
|
you can get a fairly newer Mazda6 for not much more than that.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:39 |
|
It's a Honda, so it should run until the end of time. I don't know that I would sell it, if it were me. Something like that could be useful even if you only use it as an "occasional" car.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:47 |
|
Which one is going to still be on the road in 10-15 years without having to rebuild everything?
![]() 06/19/2014 at 14:53 |
|
I've had really good luck with the two Mazdas that I've owned. If you stick to a regular maintenance schedule it with minimal hooning, you can expect 200k miles out of a mazda, easily. Maybe more with the newer ones.

I have one of these Camrys. I'm telling you, dont do this to yourself. It's a boat with no brakes, no power, and wobbly steering. Get a similar Honda Accord or Mazda 6, those things are sports cars compared to this. Unless you've been in some old Caddy, you haven't seen soft suspension like the Camry, and you won't like it.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 22:14 |

It's only worth it if you work in a cube farm and place no value on life. These cause depression. The whole world would be a happier place without Camries
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:21 |
|
Its a VVT-i 16 valve
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:32 |
|
That kind of sounds a bit on the CP then. The V6's are the ones that command the higher value.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:39 |
|
its an inline 6
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:46 |
|
There weren't any inline sixes. There was a 16 valve inline 4 and a 24 valve V6. If it were a 16 Valve inline 6, it wouldn't run.

nevermind then, im tired and dont know what im talking about right now
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:50 |

I understand lol.
![]() 06/19/2014 at 23:52 |

I usually know my stuff but when I'm tired my brain turns off, I even start to stutter
![]() 06/20/2014 at 00:11 |

Sounds like me when I'm nervous. Down to the stuttering.
![]() 06/20/2014 at 00:14 |

It feels weird to stutter when you dont normally stutter doesnt it
![]() 06/20/2014 at 00:20 |

Yes. It is almost numbing.
![]() 06/20/2014 at 00:21 |

thats actually a really good way to put it
![]() 06/20/2014 at 00:30 |

It's feels kinda like what your arm feels like when it falls asleep. Really weird.

yes, exactly
